LSCC Trade Visit - Sicily
Date: Monday, September 5, 2016 - Friday, September 9, 2016
A group of twenty-one London business leaders visited Sicily from 5th to 9th September this year. The Trade Visit, organised by London Southside Chamber of Commerce, achieved its objective of helping develop export opportunities for London businesses.
Gerry MacDonagh, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce commented that Sicily is a developing market and there are real and largely unexplored opportunities for UK business. Our party included Directors of companies in the following fields: furnishing & interior design; hotels & catering; medical & dental healthcare; medical & surgical supplies; property development investment & management; museums & art galleries; retail; tourism; wines & spirits.
On the day following our arrival we were received at the offices of the British Chamber of Commerce, Palermo, where we were given a most interesting presentation on business opportunities in the island. The auditorium with filled with local business people, who had received details of our delegation and who were keen to meet the delegates. After the presentations given by Chamber and Town Hall officials, there was a question and answer session, leading on to an open forum discussion and the opportunity for individual one to one meetings. The Italian business people attending and eager to speak with our members included hoteliers, restaurateurs, vineyards and wine makers, specialists and advisers on inward investment, medical and surgical equipment, educationists and dental practices.
Delegates met representatives of Palermo Town Hall and Sicilian members of the British Chamber of Commerce. The meetings proved informative and thought provoking and we were given a very good insight into trade and investment opportunities with Sicily and indeed the rest of Italy. Individual business appointments had also been arranged and some of our members arranged follow-up meetings with their Italian counterparts in their Palermo premises for later in the week.
In addition to the business appointments, the group had an opportunity to experience some of the major tourist delights of the island and we were treated to a truly magnificent banquet given by Antonio Cottone, owner of La Braciera - one of the top restaurants in Sicily.
