Berlin Report

Germany: Berlin
Date: Wednesday, May 19, 2010 - Sunday, May 23, 2010
London Southside Chamber of Commerce was delighted to organise and conduct a Trade Visit to Berlin from 19 to 23 May 2010.

Just an hour by air from the UK, British companies in their thousands recognise Germany as the key international marketplace on their doorstep.
Situated at the heart of Europe, Germany is the UK's number one European export market and number two world-wide, with annual sales of more than EUR 2 trillion in goods and services. In 2008 UK export of goods to Germany totalled GBP 25 bn, and UK service exports totalling GBP10.3 bn.
With a population of 82 million, Germany is Europe's largest domestic market and despite global downturns, consumer spending has defied expectation, seeing Germany exceed European average for consumer spending for year ending January 2009.
While one may readily think of industrial giants like Daimler, SAP, Siemens, Bayer and VW when thinking of Germany, the country's core economic strength in fact comes from the 'Mittelstand'. The tens of thousands of small and medium-sized companies employing 70 percent of Germany's workforce, a high percentage specialising in; high precision engineering; renewable energy; health & medical technologies, chemicals and nano-biotechnologies. While headlines may focus on emerging markets, British exporters remain convinced by what Germany offers.
Berlin is the capital and so that is where our Trade Mission went. The price was £285pp in double or twin room. This included direct return flights from London to Berlin and 4 nights stay with breakfast in the 4-star Intercity Hotel Berlin situated in Berlin city centre. We met with British Embassy officials and the local chamber of commerce. Individual business appointments were made and we had the opportunity to explore Berlin and see the major places of historical and cultural interest.
Twenty-two members came on this trade mission
Our contact at the Berlin Chamber of Commerce was Mr Nicholas Schmalz; email: schm@berlin.ihk.de and at the British Embassy it was Mr Dieter Kloss; email: dieter.kloss@fco.gov.uk
